In another masterstroke of innovative data and insights career networking socials, Generation1.ca Founder and CEO Professor Arundati Dandapani convened her Pre-Fall Career Fair and Case Competition Networking Social on June 05 at the Humber IGS campus between 4 pm – 7 pm after her classes for the day. Thank you to IGS’ IC Hub for being a key sponsor of our networking social – Rina Di Mito, Gene Wong and their teams for the dedicated support and partnership.
About the Social
Led by our Founder, this industry networking and pre-fall career fair and case competition social united esteemed guest speakers Donald Williams of Data Consulting, Dan Jackson of Q-Fi Solutions, and Iryna Lozynska of HSB Canada, each of whom delivered invaluable industry insights and personal anecdotes around their perspectives of Cybersecurity, Equity, and Sustainability Insights – the defining theme of the forthcoming Fall Virtual Insights Career Fair and Case Competition. Their collective wisdom served to inspire and invigorate the minds of students in attendance, effectively equipping them with an expanded perspective and a competitive edge for the imminent challenge that awaits active jobseekers and case competition participants on September 27, 2024, Friday.
Take a look at some of those video highlights below to uncover some tips and tricks to a successful career fair and case competition, along with other transformational career advice.

How to Prepare for the Competition?
In general, the average preparation time for Generation1.ca’s case competitions held in the spring and fall is a between 3-5 days (depending on individual schedules and the time you are able to allocate within your schedules). The reason why the time always seems less is because you need to prioritize roles and tasks and quickly develop the ability to identify the problem, analyze it, and propose a solution creatively and effectively in a short period of time. This is why the creation of the 1-minute trailer (which is not assessed) helps you strengthen your value proposition before you hit the live presentation stage.
Maybe you feel uncomfortable, nervous, anxious, and worried about not doing well. However, you need to push yourself a bit to get used to the pace, as Flora Jiang last year’s third place winner advised her peers. This type of stressful training is very effective, especially before stepping into the workplace. Q-Fi Solutions’ Dan Jackson added, “I think using that opportunity to be under pressure and that sort of the heat of what you have to present, you have to do everything, really in this short amount of time. That will help you in your future career.” HSB Canada’s Iryna Lozynska said, “You will be able to deal with tight deadlines, but if you go about it in a sort of a calm manner and collaboratively.”
Building a Stronger Case Competition Team
Team Strategy
First and foremost, clarify your team’s objectives. Define your shared vision and values, and set ambitious but achievable goals. Doing so will enable you to develop a robust, collaborative approach that draws on everyone’s strengths.
Leadership
Determine who your team leader is, and agree on their responsibilities. The leader’s role isn’t to dictate, but to coordinate team efforts, ensure a fair distribution of tasks, and provide guidance. They should facilitate communication and motivate team members to perform at their best.
Organizing and Distributing Tasks
Allocate tasks based on each team member’s unique abilities, interests, and strengths. By doing so, you will optimize productivity and efficiency, fostering a sense of ownership among your teammates. Discuss task completion deadlines, and use project management tools to track progress.
Conflict Resolution
Create a safe team environment where members can express their concerns without fear. Encourage open communication, active listening, and non-judgmental dialogue to resolve conflicts constructively.
Empathy as the Glue of Teamwork
Empathy is essential for understanding your teammates’ strengths and challenges. By putting yourself in their shoes, you can foster a supportive team culture, build trust, and spark innovation. Empathetic teammates communicate more effectively, navigate conflict constructively, and optimize collaboration.
Achieving Greater Strengths Together
By aligning your team’s vision, fostering open communication, and nurturing empathy, you can create a synergy that drives success in case competitions. Leverage your teammates’ strengths, mitigate individual weaknesses, and work together towards a common goal.
As Don Williams advised, “concentrate on teamwork and capitalize on the unique strengths of your teammates.” But don’t stop there. Iryna Lozynska recommended, “cultivate empathy to boost productivity and effectively navigate conflicts. With these strategies, your team will rise above the competition and achieve greatness.”
