Brave New World of Privacy

Generation1.ca is participating in the annual IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium 2024 again this year, which will cover the latest insights on Canadian and non-Canadian privacy laws and regulations, as well as a variety of themes across privacy in healthcare, risk management, children’s privacy, Bill-C27, data portability and data retention, women in privacy, Indigenous perspectives, PIA case studies and workshops, AI governance, and more. The agenda speaks to the key strategic priorities of Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner of protecting and promoting privacy with maximum impact, addressing and advocating for privacy in this time of technological change, and championing children’s privacy rights.

The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) is the largest and most comprehensive global information privacy community and resource and is a not-for-profit organization that helps define, promote and improve the privacy profession globally. Our Founder Arundati Dandapani is not only a credentialed member, but also serves on their Certification Advisory Board, given her several accomplishments with launching and operationalizing excellence in data and insights credentials across North America leveraging her vast and varied expertise in association leadership and data, and especially professional development for disparate analytics and insights communities, constituents and stakeholders.

In an era of rapid technological advancements, the urgency for information privacy protection has become paramount. Generation1.ca has consistently led a data-informed approach to innovation across our communities and insightful storytelling that highlight current market trends and elevate industry standards. The fundamental human right of privacy remains a crucial concern for our audiences of immigrant newcomers as social media and AI continue to permeate our work and business environments. Ninety three percent of Canadians express some level of concern about their privacy with only 4 in 10 Canadians surveyed by the OPC’s biennial surveys reported they feel that businesses respect their privacy.

Moreover, 6 in 10 Canadian Internet users have expressed apprehension regarding their inability to discern genuine online content. This issue is particularly relevant given our founder’s recent episode with hosting the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR)‘s Public Opinion Podcast, where she discussed misinformation in public opinion research with her collaborators and fellow AAPOR members. Our founder also serves on AAPOR’s Strategic Planning Committee and on their Communications Committees.

A 2023 Statistica survey revealed that a substantial 25% of global organizations believed adhering to all relevant privacy laws is essential to cultivating consumer trust. Security experts further emphasized the significance of not only preventing data breaches, but also promoting transparency in data usage to bolster confidence among consumers. It is increasingly apparent that individual internet users and businesses alike are actively seeking effective methods to uphold information privacy in today’s landscape. As more organizations recognize the importance of privacy protection, the quest for groundbreaking solutions to secure data has emerged as a pressing objective across industries.

It is therefore important to discuss the current state of Canadian and non-Canadian privacy laws and regulations, whether there are areas for improvement, and the latest policy information. In addition to this, privacy to risk management controls in various different industries such as the healthcare sector, finance and financials, etc. warrant discussion and debate including laws around data transfer, data portability, data retention obligations and the omniscient conversation about more responsible use of AI.

All this and more is what IAPP’s Canada Privacy Symposium 2024 will cover, and Generation1.ca is thrilled to be a part of this confluence again, as we reconnect with data leaders and information privacy professionals across the gamut of society and disciplines, to bring our communities and audiences up-to-date advice, innovative insights and stories that touch the most basic human right of privacy cutting across data and AI Governance and leadership for a brave new world. Stay tuned for another highly anticipated episode of Leading by Association.
