This October, Generation1.ca is honoured to be invited to present at the 9th Metropolis Identities Summit in Niagara Falls, one of Canada’s leading national forums on migration, integration, diversity and identity. Hosted by the Metropolis Institute, the Summit convenes researchers, policymakers, settlement leaders, educators, journalists and community organizations to address some of the most pressing questions shaping Canada’s future. This year’s theme, “Restoring Trust, Strengthening Relationships: Identity, Diversity, and Social Harmony in Canada,” could not be more timely.
Our CEO’s presentation, “The Immigrant Discombobulation Index: Measuring the Gap Between Expectations and Realities,” introduces a new framework developed through Generation1.ca’s research and engagement with immigrants, international students, employers and diverse communities across North America. While traditional indicators such as employment, income, education, credential recognition and language proficiency remain essential, they tell only part of the story. The Immigrant Discombobulation Index examines the often-overlooked human dimensions of settlement: belonging, trust, recognition, confidence, agency and future orientation.
At a time when Canada is rethinking immigration, workforce development and social cohesion, the ability to measure not only who arrives, but who stays, thrives and feels they belong has never been more important. These dimensions have been conspicuously missing from many North American frameworks on integration outcomes. We are proud to contribute this evidence-based, human-centred perspective to a national and increasingly global-facing conversation shaping the future of immigrant integration, public policy and inclusive communities.
We look forward to joining colleagues from across Canada and beyond to explore how better measurement can lead to better decisions and, ultimately, stronger futures for newcomers and the country we are building together. Just a few days later, Generation1.ca will continue this work on the global stage through our CEO’s presentation at the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) in Mexico, expanding the conversation from settlement and belonging to broader questions of transnational publics, representation and global social change. To book appointments at the summit in advance, please email arundati@generation1.ca, and we would love to connect with you in person!
