FOMO for Innovators?

A recent Insights Association article, featuring Arundati Dandapani, Founder and CEO of Generation1.ca, spotlights global data and insights leaders’ most pressing “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out) concerns in today’s fast-evolving landscape. Authored by Crispin Beale, the article probes what industry experts fear missing in the race to innovate—across AI, real-time analytics, and the complex management of data silos. The timing, aligned with North America’s Halloween and Diwali, the Indian festival celebrating light over darkness, highlights the common theme of overcoming fears to meet the needs of our customers and communities better. Halloween, increasingly embraced by immigrants and their children, has become a festival that binds newcomers with North American culture through shared traditions and community-building.

Dandapani brings urgency to this dialogue, stressing the need for businesses to adapt strategically to rapid socio-demographic shifts. By 2030, Gen Z, defined by strong values and social consciousness, will constitute 40% of consumers, and by 2050, one in six residents in high-income countries will be an immigrant. She warns that rising migration and aging populations demand thoughtful, actionable strategies from organizations to serve their diverse communities authentically.

With Halloween and Diwali overlapping this year, both holidays underscore the importance of confronting fears to triumph over evil—whether of darkness or of missing out on crucial opportunities. This global convergence but also plurality reflects the shared yet diverse nature of business and organizational cultures and calls on leaders and organizations to better engage with the evolving needs and values of their communities, from multi-generational households and workplaces to observing trends in emerging markets worldwide.
